Your privacy, in plain language

Kids Device Match has no user accounts and no database of visitors. We never ask for your name, email, or phone number. The matching questions ask for your child's age range and, if you choose, a first name, and both stay in your browser.

When you answer the matching questions, your answers are saved only in your own browser, using a feature called session storage. That data lives on your device so the results page can read it, and it is cleared automatically when you close the browser tab. It is never transmitted to us or anyone else.

The site is hosted by Vercel. Like any web host, Vercel receives the standard technical details every browser sends when it loads a page, such as your IP address and browser type, in order to deliver the page and protect the service, and it may keep them for a limited time in server logs. We don't use that information to identify or follow visitors. Vercel's handling of it is described in its privacy notice.

If you write to hello@kidsdevicematch.com, for example to report an error, we receive your email address and whatever you include in the message. We use it only to reply and to correct the guide, and we don't add you to any mailing list.

The matching questions let you add your child's first name so the printable family agreement can be personalized. This is entirely optional. Like every other answer, it stays in your browser on your device, is used only to fill in the agreement you print, and is never sent to us or placed in any web address.

We do not use cookies or advertising trackers, and nothing on this site identifies you or follows you from one day to the next or across other sites. We do not build profiles of visitors.

To learn which pages are useful, we use a tool from our hosting provider, Vercel Web Analytics. It doesn't use cookies. When a page loads, it records:

• the page's address, with anything after a “?” or “#” removed before it is recorded, except the standard campaign tags for a link's source, medium, and campaign (like “utm_source=newsletter”) when they are short plain labels. We add these to links we share so we can tell which ones people use; other sites may add their own.
• the address of the page that linked you here, if any, and the time
• an approximate location (country, region, and city) and your device type, operating system, and browser

We also count a few things people do, as totals:

• when someone opens the questions (which kind of page and which kind of link they came from), and each later step of the questions they reach (the step number only, never what was picked on it);
• when someone finishes the questions and sees their options (and how many options were shown);
• when someone follows a link to a device's maker or seller (which device, and which kind of page the link was on);
• when someone follows a link from one of their options on the results page, whether it was the first, second or third option (counted on its own, without which device it was);
• when someone follows any other link to another website (only that site's name, like pewresearch.org, never the full address, and which kind of page the link was on);
• when someone on the results page opens the full list of devices, opens the compare tool, opens or prints the family agreement, or starts over (only that it happened, nothing typed into the agreement);
• when someone lands on a page that doesn't exist, or opens the results page with no answers saved;
• when a page fails to load properly (which kind of page).

These counts never include your answers, your child's name or age, or anything you type. Which device's link people follow, how many options they were shown and which one they picked can hint at what suits their families, so we look at these counts only as totals.

Vercel tells visits apart with a code made from each request instead of a cookie, and discards it after 24 hours, so a visitor can't be followed from one day to the next. We see only totals, never a record of an individual visitor. Vercel describes this in its Web Analytics privacy documentation.

Our device pages and matches link out to device makers, carriers, and the official sources we cite. Once you follow a link, you are on that company's website, which has its own privacy practices we do not control. Outbound links use rel="noreferrer", so your browser doesn't tell that site which page on ours you came from. The one exception is our “View … on Amazon” links: they share this site's address, but never the page you were on.

Affiliate disclosure: some price and “Visit” links are paid (affiliate) links, and pages that have them say so near the top. A paid link contains a code that identifies this site (not the page you were on), so we can be paid a commission if you buy or sign up. When you click one, the affiliate network that handles the link and the seller may record the click and set their own cookies, under their own privacy policies. This site itself still sets no cookies, and paid links don't add to your price or change how devices are matched.

Amazon: As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Some pages have a “View … on Amazon” link. When you follow one, Amazon and other third parties may collect information directly from you and place or recognize cookies in your browser, as described in the Amazon.com Privacy Notice. You can change Amazon's interest-based ad settings on its Advertising Preferences page. Prices shown on this site are each maker's, not Amazon's.

This site is designed for parents and guardians, not for children. We do not knowingly collect any personal information from anyone, including children under 13. The optional first name is entered by a parent, stays on the parent's device, and is never collected by us, consistent with the spirit of the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).

If we ever change how the site handles data, for example by adding a feature that needs a server, we will update this page and its "last updated" date before that feature goes live. Our intent is to stay free of display ads, cookie-free, and account-free.
