Pros & cons

Pros

  • No web browser, app store, social media, or YouTube, per Fast Company (Freckle's own site doesn't say yet)
  • Calls and texts only with contacts parents approve, plus a location map and safe-zone alerts, per Fast Company
  • Parents turn on new features over time from the Freckle app, per Freckle
  • No ads on the phone, in the Parent App, or anywhere in Freckle's services, and children's information is never sold or used to train AI models, per Freckle's privacy policy
  • Quests and activities, a walkie-talkie, and a music player "without ads or algorithms," per Freckle

Cons

  • Pre-order only: Freckle says the first phones ship December 2026, so no family has used one yet, and a pre-order placed now may not be in that first batch
  • A first-generation phone that hasn't shipped: how it works day to day, and whether it lasts, is unknown. Freckle says its Parent App isn't available yet
  • Freckle lists only its own plan, Freckle Wireless (~$25/mo after a free first month)
  • Freckle says you can "point Freckle at the world" for "real-time, step-by-step tutorials, and responses"; Freckle doesn't say yet what writes those answers or whether parents can turn it off
  • Freckle says it's a kidSAFE Seal Program member "being reviewed under its COPPA safe-harbor program," and it will publish its full children's privacy notice before phones can be activated

Setup guide

Per Freckle, parents use the Freckle Parent App to "set the pace" and add features over time; Freckle says the app isn't available yet during the pre-order period. Freckle says every user is treated as a child under 13, and a parent must review its children's privacy notice and give consent before a phone can be activated.

How to talk to your child

Tell your child: 'This phone is for exploring and staying in touch with the people we pick together. We'll add more as you show you're ready.'

Freckle, official site and privacy policy

Freckle confirms a $199 kids' phone on its own $25/mo Freckle Wireless plan, with the first phones shipping December 2026, managed from a Parent App, with no ads and children's information never sold or used to train AI models. Its site doesn't yet state the browser, contact, or location details; those come from Fast Company's report.
